SEERALAM (சீராளம்)

Seeralam ( சீராளம்) is a traditional recipe famous in southern part of Tamil Nadu. There are several variations in making Seeralam with with and without rice and also various combinations of dhal (lentils). This particular recipe I learnt from my paternal grand mother where i use the left over idli batter to convert to a healthy snack.
This in a way is similar to dal chawal masala dhokla which is famous in northern india. I always use left over idli batter for making Seeralam.


Toor dhal 1/4 cup
Moong dhal 1/4 cup
Idli batter 1 cup
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Shredded ginger 1 tbsp
Mustard 1 tsp
Red chili 2-3 tsp
Urad shal 1 tbsp
Channa dhal 1 tbsp
Green chili 2-3 nos.
Hing 1/2 tsp
Onion 2 nos. shredded
Curry leaves
Oil 3 tbsp + 1 tsp
Preparation time 15 min
Cooking time 25 min
Serves 2-3 persons



Text Procedure

Step 1

Soak Toor dhal and moong dhal for 1 hour.( You can also use channa dhal also) and strain water

Step 2
Add turmeric powder, ginger and salt. Grind coarsely

Step 3
Mix Idli batter with coarsely gorund dhal mixture. Already salt is there in Idli batter.

Step 4

Pour this batter in Idli plate. Steam cook for 10 minutes

Step 5

Cut the Idli into small dices

Step 6

Heat pan,roast mustard, red chili,urad dhal,Hing, green chili and curry leaves. Add shredded onions and saute well for few minutes

Step 7
Add Seeralam dices. Crumble few pieces and saute well. Close lid for 5 minutes in low flame. Now hot protein rich serralam snack is ready.
