This is a healthy south indian breakfast recipe somewhat like Upma Kozhukattai. In kara pidi kozhukattai, tamarind water has been added to give a tangy taste.Mor milagai has been added to enhance the flavor. More importantly lot of vegetables are added to make it healthier. This kozhukattai goes well with coconut chutney combination.


Ingredients_Thengai thuvayal
Oil – 1 tsp
Red chili – 2-3 nos
Chana dal – 1 tbsp
Split black gram – 1 tbsp
Hing – small peace
Ginger – small piece
Green chili – 1-2 nos
Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Roasted ingredients
Tamarind – 1/4 lemon size
Soaked in water – 15 mins

Ingredients-Kara Pidi Kozhukattai
Ingredients for rice rawa
Raw rice – 1/2 cup
Tur dal – 4 tsp

Mor milagai(deseeded) dried skin – 4 nos.
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard – 1 tsp
Red chili – 2 nos
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Chana dal – 1 tsp
Hing – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Tamarind – 1 small lemon size
Soaked – 2 cups of water and tamarind water extracted
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Soaked rice rawa
Grated coconut – 2 tbsp
Grated carrot – 2 tbsp
Grated knol khol – 2 tbsp


Text Procedure

Thengai thuvayal

Step 1
Heat oil in a pan. Add red chili,chana dal,black gram,ginger and hing. Saute till dals turn golden brown. Add green chili and turn off stove.

Step 2

In a mixer jar, add grated coconut,roasted ingredients,soaked tamarind and salt. Add small quantity of water and grind coarsely. Now Thengai thuvayal is ready

Kara pidi kozhukattai / Upma kozhukattai

In a mixer jar , add raw rice and tur dal and dry grind coarsely.Now rice rawa is ready.

Step 2

Transfer this rawa into a vessel. Add water and rinse. Strain water fully and add fresh water. Set aside for 30 minutes.

Step 3

Slit open dried more milagai and remove seeds from it. Use only the dried skin of mor milgai and make small pieces.

Step 4

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.Then add red chilis, urad dal, dried skin of mor milagai and chana dal and roast till golden brwn colour.Add hing and curry leaves. Add tamarind extract water (soak lemon size tamarind in water for 15 minutes. Squeeze tamarind and extract tamarind water),turmeric powder and salt. Let it boil for 3 minutes. Add soaked rice rawa. Stir frequently to avoid lumps. Stir unitl it thickens. Add grated coconut,grated carrots and grated knol kohl (any vegetable can be grated and added as per individual preference). Turn off stove. Mix well. Set aside for 10 minutes.

Step 5
Take one ladle of cooled rice rawa mixture and make oval shape dumpling. It is called kozhukattai in Tamil.
