How to make Homemade Instant Rasam Powder recipe

In this post I show you how to make homemade instant rasam powder/ instant rasam podi that can be stored for a longer period. Once instant rasam powder is available, you can make tasty rasam/ tomato rasam in a matter of minutes. Instant rasam powder is available in the market but most of them have a larger content of chili powder and the taste is not suitable for all. Here at home you can adjust the ingredients for your preferences. The aroma of the rasam powder made at home is so good which will make one crave for rasam. Besides that, instant rasam powder recipe dispenses the need of soaking tamarind and the necessity to add cooked dal. It saves lot of kitchen time and is ideal rasam recipe for bachelors, working men and women.


Ingredients for Home made instant rasam powder

Coriander seed – 1 cup

Black pepper – 1/3 cup

Cumin seed – 1/4 cup

Tur dal – 1/3 cup

Hing – 1 tbsp

Turmeric powder – 1 tbsp

Red chili – 15 nos (15 gms approx)

Tamarind – 1/2 cup


Chopped tomato – 2 nos

Instant rasam powder 1/4 cup

Salt – 2 tsp


Coriander leaves


Ghee – 1 tsp

Mustard – 1 tsp

Curry leaves



Text Procedure

Roast all the ingredients as per the ingredient list separately for 2 minutes in low medium heat.

Make small pieces of tamarind ( slightly roasted) before grinding in a mixie as otherwise it may get stuck with the mixie blade.

You can add garlic while tempering if you prefer garlic taste and smell.
