Home made Baby Food

Home made baby food is a preferred alternative as compared to tinned baby food available in the market  as it is not only economical but gives increased options to customize as per individual baby’s  preferences. Solid food can generally be started from the baby’s seventh month onward. Initially it can be started with rice cereal  followed gradually by ragi cereal. The rice cereal comes with several choice combinations of which three choices are given below. It is advised to start in small quantities and slowly increase the quantity as the baby starts accepting the food.

Note: It is important to consult a pediatrician before start of solid foods.


Rice Cereal

Boiled Rice Rava    -1 tbsp.

Water                     – 4 -5 tbsp

Salt                        – 1 pinch

Choice for rice cereal

Cooked Tur dhal   – 1 tbsp

Vegetable stock    – 1/4 cup

Boiled and mashed carrot – 1tbsp

Ragi (Finger millet) Cereal

Ragi                   – 1/4 cup

Palm sugar candy – 5 g

Water                    – 3/4 cup approx.


Rice Cereal

Step 1

Take boiled rice – Ponni avaulable in Tamil nadu , Karnataka or its equivalent, wash it and dry it in muslin cloth


Step 2

Once dried , transfer to a mixie jar and grind it to form fine rice rava. This can be prepared for a consumption requirement of 15 days and stored.


Step 3

Take 1 tbsp of rice rava and add 4-5 tbsp of water and pressure cook. Add a pinch of salt to cooked rice. Now you can try any one of the combinations to go with rice – cooked Tur dhal 1 tsp with 1/4 cup boiled water, vegetable stock, cooked and mashed carrot 1 tbsp. Mix with rice and serve.



Ragi (Finger millet) Cereal

Step 1

Take Ragi (Finger millet) 1/4 cup and soak in water for 3 hours. Drain and transfer to a mixie jar. Add water and grind. Filter with a sieve.


Step 2

Put the unground ragi that could not pass through the sieve back into mixie jar, add some water and grind again and filter again. Repeat the process 3 -4 times. Collect the filtered ragi in a bowl.


Step 3

Take 5 grams of palm candy sugar (Tamil “panam kalkandu”) and add little water and dissolve it. Pass it through a strainer to the ragi mixture.


Step 4

Heat the ragi mixture in a low flame for 3-4 minutes till it thickens. Stir it continuously so that lumps are not formed.


Step 5

Ragi cereal is ready. If baby  prefers liquid form, then you can add 1/4 cup boiling water. Feed the baby when it is fresh.
