Aloo poha/ Poha/ Flattened rice poha/Aval Upma & Aval curd rice/ Poha curd rice/ Avalakki curd rice

Poha/ aloo poha recipe/ flattened rice poha is a quick and tasty breakfast made with flattened rice (Poha/Aval/Avalakki),potato,onion,peanuts and spices. It is very popular in Maharashtra, Gujarat & Karnataka. In Maharashtra kanda(onion) batata(potato) poha is a popular street food. You can add green peas also to enhance the variety and taste.

You should choose medium or thick poha and avoid thin poha. If you use medium size, rinse and drain immediately and avoid soaking. If you use thick poha,you can soak for 5 minutes. Drain water after soaking period of 5 minutes is over. It should not turn musky. During the period poha gets soaked, heat pan and do tempering. You can saute onions and potato for 5 minutes.

Flattened rice/Poha/Aval/Avalakki Curd rice is famous in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. There are several variations of Poha- Lemon poha/ uppuma poha/ Tamarind poha etc.The preparation time is very less Poha is very healthy and easy to digest. It can be taken for breakfast or in lunch box as mini lunch. Some people take it as Upavas prasad with Hing and without tempering. Poha curd rice can be part of any daily food course. Adding fruits and fresh vegetables make it elderly people friendly. You can also add dry fruits and nuts

Ingredients

Procedure for Aval curd rice

Thick flattened rice (poha) ½ cup

Peanuts 2 tbsp

Red chili 1 no.

Mustard ½ tsp

Cumin seed ½ tsp

Onion 2 nos. (chopped)

Turmeric powder ¼ tsp

Grated ginger 1 tbsp

Hing ¼ tsp

Potato 2 nos. (diced)

Green chili 2 nos. (slit)

Grated coconut 2 tbsp

Coriander leaves 2 tbsp (chopped)

Curry leaf Lemon juice 2 tsp

Salt 1 1/2 tsp

Sugar 1 1/2 tsp

Oil 4 tsp

Cooking time 12 min

Makes 2 1/2 cups

Ingredients for Aval curd rice (Poha curd rice)

Thick flattened rice ½ cup

(Poha/அவல்/Avalakki)

Curd ¾ to 1 cup

Grated carrot ¼ cup

Grated cucumber ¼ cup

Pomegranate ¼ cup

Hing ¼ tsp

Mustard ½ tsp

Green chili 1 no. split

Shredded ginger ½ tsp

Curry leaves

Oil 1 tsp

Salt

Preparation time = 05 min

Cooking time = 03 min

Makes 2 cups

Procedure for Aloo poha/ Aval Upma

✅Step 1

Heat Oil.Roast peanuts in oil and remove. In the same oil , add mustard, cumin seeds,onions and saute till onions get translucent. Add green chili,grated ginger,hing and curry leavves.

✅Step 2

Add diced potatoes, salt and water. Cover lid and allow potatoes to be cooked.

✅Step 3

Rinse poha two times and soak for 5 minutes. Drain water completely. Add salt and sugar into it. Mix gently.

✅Step 4

Add poha with cooked potato. Cover lid for 2-3 minutes.

✅Step 5

Add roasted peanuts,coriander leaves,grated coconut, lemon juice. Mix gently

Quick and tasty breakfast (aloo poha/poha/flattened rice poha/aval upma/avalakki upma) is ready.

Procedure for Aval curd rice

✅Step 1

Rinse and strain thick flattened rice (Poha/aval/avalakki) 3 times

✅Step 2

Add Hing and salt with curd and mix well

✅Step 3

Add curd with strained poha. Mix without mashing

✅Step 4

Add fresh grated carrot,cucumber and pomegranate. Mix well. Serve it as Upvas Prasad.
