How to make Kandathipili rasam

Kandathippili Rasam | Thippili Rasam | Pipili Rasam | Long pepper rasam |கண்டதிப்பிலி ரசம் is a healthy ayurvedic rasam prepared in many homes in Tamil Nadu that gives sore throat relief, cough relief , cold relief and body pain relief. My grand mother and my mother used to make this rasam often during winter and rainy seasons. The root of the long pepper is called kandathippili and the fruit of the plant is called arisi thippili. The root and fruit are dried and used as a spice in our traditional ayurvedic food. This rasam should be taken with hot steamed rice ,ghee and tur dal thogayal (paruppu thogayal).


Kandathippili – 6-8 nos

Arisithippili – 6-8 nos

Tur dal – 4-5 tsp

Black pepper – 1 tsp

Coriander seed – 2 tsp

Red chili – 1 no

Hing – 1/2 tsp

Cumin seed – 1 tsp

Curry leaves

Tamarind – 1 lemon size

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Oil – 2 tsp

Salt Ghee – 3-4 tsp

Mustard – 1 tsp

Text procedure

Step 1

Heat oil in a pan. Roast kandathippili (long pepper) and arisi thippili for 30 seconds. Add tur dal and black pepper and roast for 1 minute. Add coriander seeds and red chili. Roast till dal turns to golden brown. Turn off stove.

Step 2
Add hing, cumin seeds and curry leaves with roasted ingredients. Dry grind at room temperature.

Step 3

To the extracted tamarind juice from soaked lemon size tamarind add turmeric powder and boil till the raw smell of tamarind goes (around 7-8 minutes). Add ground powder and salt. Boil for 5 minutes.

Step 4
Add water. Froth forms on top layer. Avoid boiling.Turn off stove.

Step 5
Heat ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Let it splutter. Add curry leaves. Add this tempering to rasam. Healthy Kandathippili rasam is now ready.

Serve the healthy kandathippili rasam with hot steamed rice with ghee and paruppu thogayal (Tur dal chutney)
