EZHUKARI KOOTU/ THALAGAM

Ezhukari kootu as the name implies in Tamil is a mix of 7 vegetables cooked for the Thiruvathirai festival coinciding with Thiruvathirai star (Arudra star) in the Tamil month of Marghazhi. This is offered as a prasadam for lord Shiva. This item can be taken with rice as part of a meal course and also as a side dish for chappatis and Poori. It is also referred as Thalagam.

Ingredients

Mix of 7 Vegetables
(Avarai, Vazhaikai, Mochai,
karunai kizhangu,, Parangikai,
Kathirikai,Valikizhangu) – 300 g
Turmeric                            – 1/4 tsp
Tamarind                           – 1 small lemon size
Salt
Grated coconut                  -1/2 cup
Cooked Toor dhal              – 1 cup
Gingelly oil                         – 4 tsp
Mustard                               – 1 tsp
Curry leaves                       – 10 nos.
Roasting
Red chili                               -4-5 nos.
Black pepper                       -1/4 tsp
Fenugreek                           -1/4 tsp
Coriander seeds                 -4 tsp
Bengal gram                       -2 tsp
Urad dhal                             -1 tsp
Hing                                      -1/2 tsp
Black sesame seeds (optional) – 2 tsp
