Coconut puran poli (தேங்காய் போளி) or Kayi holige is one of the traditional dish from Karnataka which is commonly prepared during festivals and functions.Coconut poli is prepared using nice rava and maida. So this poli looks dry and stiff but it just melts in your mouth. The outer layer of poli can also be made with maida or wheat flour instead of rava.

Maida 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder 1 pinch
Grated fresh coconut (tightly filled) 1 cup
Jaggery 1/4 cup heaped
Cardamom 4 nos.
Poppy seeds(khus khus) 2 tsp Optional

Step 1 Outer dough preparation
Take rava, maida and turmeric powder and mix together
Add water in small quantities 2-3 times and make soft dough. Then add oil. Punch and knead the dough 3-4 times. Use 1/2 cup water because rava will absorb more water.
Note: 1.You can use maida or wheat flour instead of rava
2. Set aside for 3 hours
Step 3 Pooranam (Puran) preparation
Melt jaggery by adding water and boiling for 3-4 minutes. Strain to get jaggery syrup.
Add 2 tbsp water to grated coconut and add cardamom to it. Then grind to coarse paste ( Don’t grind to fine paste)
Add coconut paste to jaggery syrup. Stir till it thickens. Add poppy seeds (கச கசா) (optional) and mix well. Now pooranam (puran) is ready. Let it cool.
Step 6 Preparing for stuffing puran inside outer rava dough
After 3 hours, take big lemon size coconut puran and make it into a ball. Step 7
Now take rava dough for outer layer. Take rava dough slightly bigger in size than the cocount puran ball . Slightly press the edges and flatten. Keep the coconut puran ball and cover it with rava dough by bringing all sides together and seal it properly. Now we have a single ball with rava dough outside and coconut puran inside.
Step 8 Rolling Poli
Slightly press and flatten in a parchment paper. Then roll from top to bottom by using rolling pin. Then turn the paper and roll it again till you get thin poli.
Step 9 Cooking Poli
Grease the pan. Transfer poli to the pan. Keep stove in low medium flame. After 3-4 minutes flip to the other side. Add 1/2 tsp oil on both sides. Cook another 2-3 minutes. Now crispy sweet coconut puran poli (தேங்காய் போளி) or Kayi holige is ready.
